Hillcrests tops Whittier to defend Grade School title

With pentathlon winners Aubree Corcoran and Erik Johns leading the way, the Hillcrest Hornets held off a charge from Whittier Wednesday to win yet another Grade School track meet.

The event, which drew more than 550 young athletes to the Charlee Merrifield Track, was sponsored by the Butte Athletic Council.

The Hornets compiled 385 points to take home the team title. Whittier was second at 324. Margaret Leary was a distant third at 194, followed by West at 141, Butte Central at 125, Ramsay at 95, Kennedy at 90, Emerson at 46 and Montessori at 26.

No meet records fell, but there were some impressive performances nonetheless.

Corcoran, a sixth grader at Hillcrest, scored 28 points to win the girls’ pentathlon, edging Ramsay’s Braleigh Garrett by three points. Whittier’s Taylinn Garrett placed a close third with 23 points.

Johns, also a Hillcrest sixth grader, scored 40 points claim the boys’ pentathlon crown. Brian Holland of Butte Central placed second at 29, while Margaret Leary’s Jake Humphrey took third with 24 points.
