Hillcrest runs away with Grade School title

Evie Smith, Matthew Marsenich win pentathlon

The Hillcrest Hornets picked up the team title Wednesday as the Grade School Track Meet returned to the Charlie Merrifield Track inside the Gene Fogarty Complex.

Hillcrest scored 325.25 points to win the meet, which was last held in 2019. COVID-19 wiped out the last two years. (Team scores; Individual results; Pentathlete results)

Margaret Leary took second at 257.6, and West Elementary placed third at 235.50. Whittier placed fourth at 228.75, followed by Emerson at 161.5, Butte Central at 128.5, Ramsay at 44 and Kennedy at 38.

Kaspian Lutke of Hillcrest set a meet record with a jump of 7 feet, 9 inches in the fifth-grade boys’ standing long jump.

Paul Klimpel of Longfellow set the old mark of 7-0 in 1998. Whitter’s Gavin Holm placed second in the event. He also broke Klempel’s record with a leap of 7-5.

Evie Smith of Margaret Leary and Matthew Marsenich of Emerson won the pentathlon titles. Smith scored 46 points in her five events. Fellow sixth grader Cambree O’Neill of Emerson placed second at 28, while Cambri Campbell of Hillcrest took third with 25.

Marsenich also scored 46 points to win on the boys’ side. Margaret Leary’s Kodye Kjersten placed second at 30, and Xavier Jory of Whittier took third at 28.

The meet drew 460 young athletes to the sunny afternoon event that was sponsored by the Butte Athletic Council.

Athletes from Butte High were in charge of the field events.
