Helena’s Heller fires 66 to lead Mid-Am

The Helena golfer fired a four-under-par 66 Thursday to take a six-shot lead at the 28th Montana State Men’s Mid-Amateur golf tournament.

Heller, who tied with Butte’s Rick Lyons for second place behind Helena’s John Reeves at the 2004 Mid-Am at the Butte Country Club, matched par on every hole of the front nine on his way to a bogie-free day. He birdied the 10th, 11th, 13th and 17th for a 31 on the back nine.

Dan Mulholland of Butte is one of four golfers tied for second at 72. Craig Hurlbert of Hamilton, Ross Bartell of Great Falls, and Michael Williams of Clancy are the others. Leaderboard

Defending champion Logan Lindholm of Kalispell sits seven back at 73. Three golfers shot 74, while Butte’s Fred Zemljak and Montana Western women’s basketball coach Lindsay Woolley were among the four golfers who shot 75.

The three-day tournament continues at 7:30 a.m. on Friday with the lowest handicapped golfers teeing off first.
