Helena Spoils Homecoming for Butte High Volleyball

By Holly Jordan Carpenter

A rowdy Butte High student crowd came out Tuesday night to cheer on the Bulldogs for their homecoming match. Unfortunately, the night ended with a loss to the Helena Bengals 3 – 0.

The Bulldogs came out strong fighting neck and neck for a first set which ended with the Bengals scoring 25 against the Bulldogs 23. After that win the Bengals didn’t slow down beating the Bulldogs 25 – 12 in the second set and 25 – 17 in the third.

Sophomore setter, Jaycee Cleveland, led in numbers with 17 assists. Junior, Mickenzie McIntyre, delivered 6 kills and senior, Camille Kautzman, led the pack in digs with 9. The Bulldogs served 4 aces, 2 by junior, Maddie Luedtke, and 1 each by Cleveland and junior, Mackenzie Hansen.

Coach Shane Jorgensen said, “The first game of the match was a lot of fun. Unfortunately, our 14 unforced errors got in the way of a win. We need to get more consistent hitting and serving in order to stay in the matches.” Jorgensen believes that the win loss record does not reflect the ability of the girls on the court. “Our girls just need to trust that they are improving each game. We have short term goals but we need to look at, and keep in mind, our long term goal is this year.”

The Bulldogs head to Helena this Thursday to take on the Capital Bruins. The varsity game begins at 7:00PM.
