Hawks turn back Bulldogs

GREAT FALLS — Thursday couldn’t have gone much worse for the Butte High boys’ basketball team.

The Bulldogs fell behind early to Bozeman, and the Hawks rolled to a 71-28 win in the first round of the Eastern AA Divisional tournament at the CMR Fieldhouse.

The loss sends the Bulldogs to the loser-out side of the bracket, where they’ll play Billings West at 12:30 p.m. Friday. Butte High needs to win two games to qualify for the Class AA State tournament, which is next week in Butte. West fell 74-73 to Billings Senior Thursday night.

“It happened,” Bulldog coach Luke Powers said. “We didn’t play well, and they played extremely well. We have to have a short memory and get ready for tomorrow.”

Ryan Simpson returned from a wrist injury and scored 17 points to lead the Hawks, who improved to 14-5 and advanced to the semifinals. He was one of three players to score in double figures.

Ryan Lonergan scored 15 points in the win, while Carter Ash tossed in 11. In all, 10 different Bozeman players scored points.

Clay Ferguson scored 10 points to lead the Bulldogs, who shot 0 for 12 from behind the 3-point line.

Danny McCloskey scored six points, and Jake Olson tossed in five before fouling out. He picked up three fouls in the first half. Tommy Mellott scored four points, and Kale McCarthy netted three.

Powers said his Bulldogs (4-15) are not going to look past their next game.

“One game at a time,” he said. “This one is over so now we move on and have to respond. Our kids have dealt with adversity before. They’ll stand back up and compete hard tomorrow at 12:30.”
