Hafer, Montana stay 17th in Washington heat

WALLA WALLA, Wash. — Shealyn Hafer and Team Montana held steady in 17th place after the second round of the Girls’ Junior America’s Cup at the Walla Walla Country Club.

Hafer, a soon-to-be Butte High senior, shot an 85 in the heat during Wednesday’s second round. That followed Tuesday’s 88. As a team, Montana improved five shots from Day 1 for a 249. Montana sits at plus 71 heading into Thursday’s final round.

Southern California leads at 2 under par. Mexico is second at plus 2. British Columbia is a distant third at plus 13.

Kalispell’s Teigan Avery led Montana with an 81 on Wednesday. Hannah Zwemke of Billings shot 83 for the second straight day, while Coral Schulz of Helena hit a 98.

Hafer said the heat and length of the 6,500-yard course has been tough to overcome.

“The course is playing long and hard, and the head is also making a big difference,” she said. “It has reached 100 the past three days.”
