Athlete of the Week Grunhuvds star on Flathead mats for Butte High girls

This weeks Athletes of the Week are Nevaeh and Sophie Grunhuvd.

Sophomore sisters Nevaeh and Sophie Grunhuvd snagged a championship and a runner-up finish to lead Butte High’s efforts Saturday as the Flathead Invitational high school girls’ wrestling tournament concluded in the Flathead High gym.

Nevaeh Grunhuvd won the championship at 132 pounds, pinning Flathead’s Brady Boll in 1 minute, 1 second of their title bout. Sophie Grunhuvd beat everybody on her side of the 126-pound bracket before losing 4-6 to Ronan standout Katie Dolence in their championship match.

Congratulations girls keep working hard.

Two more Bulldogs, Peyton Liva and Mattie Stepan, also placed as the team gathered 121 points for sixth place in the 47-team tournament. Billings Senior won the meet with 307 points while Flathead was second with 255, Ronan third with 169, Cut Bank fourth with 137 and Helena Capital was fifth with 127 points.

Liva and Stepan both had fifth-place finishes. Liva toughed out a 3-2 win over Ciri Nice of nament results Polson in their consolation final at 100 pounds, and Stepan stapled Leona Dodson Howe of Ronan at the 5-minute mark of their bout for fifth place.

The Butte High girls are scheduled to wrestle Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Belgrade in the old Butte High gym for their home opener.
