Grizzly golfers sit in 16th in final fall tourney

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE, Ark. — The Montana women’s golf team shot a first-round 323 on Sunday as the three-day Little Rock Golf Classic opened at the Diamante Country Club.

The Grizzlies are in 16th place out of 16 teams, with two more rounds to be completed on Monday and Tuesday. Results

Juniors Kari Opatz and Hailey Hoagland, and sophomore Baylee Barckley all shot 7-over scores of 79 to lead the team. Freshmen Teigan Avery and Abby Pfeifer both carded rounds of 86.

Hoagland is a Butte High graduate.

Opatz, Hoagland and Barckley are tied for 57th, Avery and Pfeifer are tied for 82nd.

Four teams broke 300 on Sunday, with UTEP leading the way with a 295. UMKC shot a 296, Central Arkansas a 298 and North Texas a 299. Host Arkansas-Little Rock and Houston Baptist are tied for fifth after carding scores of 300.

UTEP’s June Ting and Missouri State’s Rachel Johnson both shot 2-under 70s and lead the 86-player field. UMKC’s Cynthia Diaz and Houston Baptist’s Kaity Cummings, with 1-under 71s, are also under par through 18 holes.

The tournament is the final event of the fall for Montana.
