Griz OT Schmaing out for 2014 season

MISSOULA — The University of Montana football team will be without offensive tackle John Schmaing for the 2014 season due to academic issues.

“Everybody in college football has situations that they obviously have to deal with like this, and this just happens to be ours right now,” said Griz head coach Mick Delaney.  “John’s got another year to play, so he’ll be an integral part of the team this year, and carry that on into his senior season in 2015.  Like anything else, you just have to move forward and stay positive, and that’s exactly what we are doing.”

A 6-foot-7, 290-pound junior from Billings, Schmaing would have been starting for the second season in a row this year.  Last year he started all 13 games at left tackle and was an honorable mention All-Big Sky Conference selection.
