Griz golfers tied for 10th through two rounds in Phoenix

PHOENIX — The Montana golf team shot rounds of 316 and 311 on Saturday and is tied for 10th out of 15 teams at the Grand Canyon Invitational at the Grand Canyon Championship Golf Course.

Among Big Sky Conference schools, the Grizzlies are sitting behind Portland State (296-304), Northern Colorado (302-306) and Montana State (299-324), and ahead of Eastern Washington (312-319). (Results)

Senior Hailey Hoagland (80-73–153) and junior Baylee Barckley (76-77–153) lead Montana and are tied for 23rd overall in the 85-player field.

After opening with an 8-over 80 on Saturday, Hoagland, a Butte High graduate, shot a 73 in the afternoon, her seventh round with a score of 75 or better this year.

She birdied her first and 17th holes of her second round, nearly balancing out a double bogey on No. 8 and bogey on No. 17.

Barckley birdied three of the course’s four par 5’s in her opening round. She added two more birdies in the afternoon.

Sophomore Teigan Avery (80-79–159) is tied for 52nd, senior Kari Opatz (80-83–163) and freshman Faith D’Ortenzio (81-82–163) are tied for 67th.

Utah Valley (300-297) leads the field by three strokes over Portland State, eight over Northern Colorado.

Montana State’s Kelly Hooper carded rounds of 70 and 76 and holds the 36-hole lead at 2-over. She’ll have three players within a stroke of her going into Sunday’s final round.
