Griz golfers place 14th at Rose City Collegiate

AURORA, Ore. — The Montana women’s golf team shot a final-round 315 on Tuesday at the Langdon Farms Golf Club to finish 14th out of 15 teams at the Rose City Collegiate.

The Grizzlies, who two weeks ago went 307-302-307 at the Washington State Cougar Cup in Pullman to get the fall off to a successful start, opened with rounds of 307 and 312 on Monday.

“We just need to go out and play with more confidence. The players need to trust their abilities. That’s basically what it comes down to,” said second-year coach Matt Higgins.

Four of Montana’s five individual scores on Tuesday were in the 80s. The exception was freshman Teigan Avery, who finished off a strong tournament with a 3-over 75. She opened with back-to-back rounds of 77 on Monday.

Avery double-bogeyed her second hole on Tuesday, then played her final 16 at 1-over to tie for 39th.

Junior Hailey Hoagland (73-74-80) was tied for 12th after Monday’s rounds. The Butte High graduate shot 80 on Tuesday, leaving her tied for 31st.

Junior Kari Opatz (76-80-80) tied for 59th, sophomore Baylee Barckley (81-81-84) tied for 81st, and freshman Caitlyn Villatora (86-82-80) finished 84th.

Villatora took a 7-over 12 on the par-5 18th, her ninth hole of the day. She played the other 17 holes at 1-over. Cal State Fullerton’s Martina Edberg (70-70-72) held off a trio of Big Sky Conference pursuers to win by a stroke at 4-under.

Southern Utah’s Kamonwan Prasurtwong (73-72-68) and Sacramento State’s Sofie Babic (72-70-71) both finished 3-under. Portland State’s Tara Finigan (73-69-73) was 1-under and finished fourth.

Oregon State (290-295-291) closed with a 291 to move past day-one leader Sacramento State (294-289-296) and post a three-stroke victory over the Hornets. Portland State (300-288-299) came in third, eight strokes behind Sacramento State.

Northern Arizona (304-298-298), Northern Colorado (307-302-301), Weber State (310-305-298), Southern Utah (307-303-304) and Eastern Washington (308-304-303) all finished ahead of Montana.

Higgins will take five players to Southern California later this week for the Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate. The tournament will be played at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, California.
