Griz announce home-and-home series with Northern Iowa

MISSOULA — The Montana Grizzlies and Northern Iowa Panthers will square off in a home-and-home series between two of the most successful programs in Football Championship Subdivision history beginning in the fall of 2016.

On Sept. 10, 2016 the Griz will travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa, on the first leg of the series, the second visit to UNI in team history. The Panthers make the return trip to Washington-Grizzly Stadium two years later on Sept. 1, 2018 to complete the agreement.

The 2016 trip to UNI will mark the sixth overall meeting between two of the strongest programs in the Big Sky Conference and Missouri Valley Football Conference. The Griz are undefeated against the Panthers in all six contests.

Montana’s only visit to the UNI-Dome came on Oct. 3, 1987, when the Griz came away with a 33-16 victory in the non-conference regular season contest.

The Panthers have traveled to Missoula for the previous three meetings between the schools, all of which have come in the NCAA FCS playoffs. Montana hosted UNI in 1994, 2001, and 2011 during its run of 22 playoff appearances. Northern Iowa has made 17 total FCS playoff appearances.

Also of note in Northern Iowa’s 2016 non-conference schedule are games against Iowa State of the FBS, and Big Sky foe, Eastern Washington.

The Griz are ranked No. 13 in The Sports Network’s 2015 preseason rankings, while the Panthers enter the season ranked No. 10.

Montana will open its first fall camp under Coach Bob Stitt on Aug. 3.
