Great Falls High wiped out an early deficit and then owned the second half while posting a 57-46 first-round victory over Missoula Sentinel Thursday in the first round of the state Class AA high school boys’ basketball tournament in the Butte Civic Center.
Sentinel led 15-12 after one quarter and expanded the difference before Great Falls High began rallying. The Bison closed the gap to 23-22 by intermission, then got the better of the Spartans on the inside in the second half to come away with the victory.
Kyle Torgerson scored 18 points for Great Falls High, which also got a 14-point, 10-rebound performance from Blake Thelen. The Bison defense held Sentinel to 33 percent shooting from the field and the Spartans were a cold 2-for-17 from 3-point range.
Tony Frohlich-Fair had 12 points for Sentinel while Scott Malikie and Alex Germer each scored 11.
Great Falls High will take an 18-4 record into the semifinals at 5 p.m. on Friday. Sentinel, now 16-7, will play a loser-out game at 10:30 Friday morning.
