Hillcrest defends track crown

The Hillcrest Hornets successfully defended their city track crown, running away with the combined team title at the annual Grade School Track Meet at the Charlie Merrifield Track at Bulldog Memorial Stadium.

Hillcrest scored an eye-popping 441 points to easily win the combined title. Margaret Leary placed second at 215.5 points. Butte Central was third at 173, followed by Whittier at 143 and West at 121.

On the girls’ side, the Hornets racked up 327 points to win the title. Central placed second at 91. Whittier was third at 66.

Margaret Leary won the boys’ crown ¬†with 193.5 points. Hillcrest was second at 114. West took third at 98.

Butte Central’s Aaron Richards was the lone record-setter of the day. He erased Justin Doctor’s 2004 mark in the boys’ fifth grade shot put with a mark of 35 feet, 4 inches. Doctor, of Whittier, set the record with a 33-10 put in 2004.

Bailey Parker of West won the boys’ sixth-grade pentathlon, scoring 40 points in the five-event competition. Joshua Neil of Margaret Leary placed second at 34, while Clay Fisher of Hillcrest took third at 30.

Brittney Tierney, who attends the Silver Bow Montessori School, won the girls’ pentathlon with 42 points. Hillcrest’s Gabbie Parini was second at 32, followed by Skye Partelow of Kennedy at 28.

In all, nearly 600 athletes competed in the event, which drew a huge crowd on a picture-perfect day.
