Goligoski, Broncs buck Maroons

Apparently, Taylor Goligoski likes playing in the Maroon Activities Center.

The Hamilton junior guard scored 31 points — with 29 coming in the first three quarters — to lead the Broncs to a 52-39 win over Butte Central at the MAC Saturday.

Goligoski scored inside and outside, hitting on 5 of 8 shots from behind the 3-point line. In three games against the Maroons at the MAC the last two seasons — including the Southwestern A divisional championship game — Goligoski is averaging 23.7 points per game.

“She just plays within herself,” BC coach Meg Murphy said. “She doesn’t get upset. She’s just a good player.”

Gologoski hit three 3-pointers in the second quarter to help the Broncs build a 30-18 halftime lead. She added 12 more in the third quarter, and Hamilton took command with a 44-25 advantage.

Murphy’s Maroons, though, didn’t let up, even after falling behind 48-25.

Led by senior Shelby Paffhausen, the Maroons outscored the Broncs 14-4 to close out the game.

“That probably overall was her best game,” Murphy said of Paffhausen, who scored nine of her team-leading 15 points in the final stanza. “She went hard to the basket.”

Just four BC players scored points, but the Maroons got contributions from up and down the roster.

Freshman Mollie Peoples came off the bench to hit a pair of 3-pointers and score 12 points. Sophomore Ryan Trudnowski scored seven points to go along with five rebounds, and freshman Emily St. John scored five points and dished out three assists.

Paffhausen and senior guard Chandra McCurdy both grabbed five rebounds. McCurdy also collected three steals, while sophomore Sierra Pica tallied four steals, and sophomore Teresa Piazzola added three boards and two steals.

“Defensively we did well,” Murphy said. “The seniors who came in and played their butts off and created a lot o good things, and our young kids played well.”

Murphy praised the play of McCurdy, whose had the play of the game for the Maroons. McCurdy knocked the ball loose and dove to tip the ball to Pica. That resulted in a fast-break basket by Paffhausen.

“Those are things you appreciate because she busts her butt,” Murphy said. “She does all the little things for us. She’s doing the dirty work for everybody. Sometimes she doesn’t get the kudos, but I’m pleased with her performance.”

Shawnee Hjelt and Kate Ossello, a pair of sophomores, also contributed for the Maroons. Seniors Rylee Green and Courtney Thomas also saw time late.

Sami Kratofil added seven points and seven boards for the Broncs, who improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in Southwestern A play. Jaylee Albert and Brianna Huggans each scored five.

The Maroons, who saw a two-game winning streak snapped, fell to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in conference. They will be back in action Thursday when they head to Dillon for another Southwestern A tilt.

Murphy said her young team is headed in the right direction.

“Our defense has improved immensely since break. We’re getting better each game,” she said. “We have a long ways to go, but we can get there.”
