Glacier sweeps Butte High in softball twin bill

By Bruce Sayler
The search for answers continued Saturday for Butte High softball. The Bulldogs fell twice, both times by a 12-1 margin, to Glacier High of Kalispell in a Western AA Conference doubleheader at Stodden Park.
The 10-run difference rule kicked in both times in five innings of play. The weather was sometimes cold, often windy, but also sun-splashed at times. The twin bill drew a good crowd.
“We’re not doing a lot of things right,” head coach Ryan Stosich said after the second game. “We better figure it out.”
The losses dropped Butte High to 1-7 for the season, 1-5 in conference games. The Bulldogs are to play Missoula Big Sky on Tuesday in a 3 p.m. league clash at Stodden Park. Glacier improved to 9-2 overall and 6-2 in Western AA play. The Wolfpack walloped five home runs on the day.

(Second Game)
Butte High hurt itself badly with errors in the second-game defeat. The Bulldogs committed five for the game, including three dropped infield popups in the third inning that led to Glacier’s first four runs of the game.
Leary matched shutout innings with the Wolfpack’s Warriner, a freshman hurler, through two innings. Warriner blanked the Bulldogs again in the top of the third. Butte High had the role of visitor the second game of the twin bill since Butte High won’t play at Glacier this season.
Glacier loaded the bases in the bottom of the third with one out on a dropped popup, walk and infield hit. A comebacker forced Nakiah Persinger out at the plate and kept the bags full. Four runs then scored on two consecutive muffed popups that rolled into the outfield. The Wolfpack had a 4-0 advantage going into the fourth inning.
Glacier then socked three home runs in an eight-run fourth inning. Roskasky launched a two-run shot over left field after Persinger reached base on an error. Farrell singled home Emma Cooke, who had doubled. Warriner singled an out later, setting up a three-run blast by Paishance Haller, also over the left-field fence. Khirsten Tirrell then doubled to left field and Goudette belted a home run to left.

Ferriter led off the inning with a base hit that got past the center fielder. So, Ferriter ran on to second base, but was cut down trying to continue to third. Mullaney rapped a single to right that the Wolfpack’s Karley Allen dove for and nearly caught. Kamber Leary and Madisyn Swanson punched back-to-back singles to pack the sacks. Mattie Stepan then stung a bouncer to the right side, scoring Mullaney from third. However, Persinger, the shortstop, snagged Jonart’s grounder and threw her out at first to end the game.
The Bulldog offense did compile nine hits – including Mullaney’s 3-for-3 performance with a double. Swanson hit two singles, and Ferriter, Leary, Stepan and Lee each singled.
