Gillette too Wild for Cobras in weekend opener

Six different Gillette players scored goals Friday night, and the first-place wild skated past the Butte Cobras for a 6-4 win.

The game was the opener of a two-game set between the NA3HL Frontier Division foes. (Stats)

Butte led 3-2 before Alex Duchemin and Vance Kleinschmidt scored late in the second period to put the Wild up for good. Sky Solig added a goal to make it a 5-3 game early in the third.

Butte’s Fabian Vik scored off assists from Caelin Chinery and Ross Biggerstaff to cut the lead to one. Tucker Lien, though, added an insurance goal for the Wild 4 minutes later.

Nick Bradshaw put the Cobras up 5 minutes into the game, scoring off assists from Luke Schleusner and Cade Wessman. Caleb Sanborn and Zack Slinger answered with Gillette goals to give the Wild a 2-1 edge.

Bradshaw’s second goal tied the game at 2 just 24 seconds into the third. Wessman and Scheusner assisted that goal. Schleusner gave the Cobras the 3-2 lead with 9:54 left in the second. Wessman and Jonathan O’Brien assisted.

The Butte lead lasted 6 minutes. Then Duchemin and Kleinschmidt took the lead back.

Gillette improve to 34-3-1 with the victory. Butte fell to 15-22-2.

The teams will meet again Saturday at the Ice Center. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
