LAUREL — A pair of future Montana Tech golfers finished in second place at the Montana State Junior Championships at the Laurel Golf Club.
The two-day tournament wrapped up Tuesday, and Montana Tech signees Joe Opitz and Emma Woods placed second overall and in their 16 to 18 age group. The tournament is a qualifier for the Junior Americas Cup. (Leaderboard)
Opitz, of Missoula, shot a 1-over-par 73 both rounds for a total of 146. He finished one shot behind Billy Smith of Whitefish. Smith hit 72-73.
Eli Groshelle of Great Falls placed third at 149. Butte’s Jack Prigge, a soon-to-be Butte High senior, placed 12th at 158. He it a 77 and an 81.
Laurel’s Cameron Hackman won the 14-15 division with a 148, beating Sam Norman of Laurel by one shot. Butte’s Brenner Booth hit 87 and 86 for a 173 and 13th place. Butte’s Chase Choquette shot a 90 each day for 16th place at 180.
Woods followed an 81 with an 83 for a 164. Corvallis star Macee Greenwood, who will play collegiately at Boise State, ran away with the title. She shot 77 each day for a 154.
Laurel’s Kadence Fischer placed third at 165.
The Girls Junior Americas Cup is July 26-28 in Helena. The Boys Junior Americas Cup is Aug. 2-4 in Pleasanton, California.
Opitz and Woods will join the Orediggers in the fall.
