DILLON — It didn’t take long for J.D. Ferris to get a signature win at Montana Western.
The true freshman and former Dillon Beavers star hit Matt Lickfold for a 5-yard touchdown pass with 18 seconds left Saturday at Vigilante Field as the Bulldogs beat the College of Idaho 24-20. Stats
The Frontier Conference win lifts the Bulldogs to 2-0 on the season. Dating back to last season, the Bulldogs have now won six straight.
“I am super proud of our entire team,” Bulldog coach B.J. Robertson said. “They guys just kept grinding. Hopefully that’s our m.o. this season.”
The game winning touchdown capped a big day for Ferris, who started for the second straight week. Ferris ran for 164 yards and a touchdown. He also completed 15 of 30 passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns.
The game-winning touchdown came after Hartvig Bondo booted a 26-yard field goal to break a 17-all tie with 2 minutes, 29 seconds.
Western responded with a 16-play, 80-yard drive to win the game.
“The offense put it together and did a heck of a job,” Robertson said. “The O-line did a good job giving (Ferris) time to throw. When it wasn’t there, he did a nice job scrambling and moving the chains.”
Lickfold caught a pass for a first-down moments before the game-winning score.
The Coyotes (1-2 overall, 1-1 Frontier) built a 10-0 lead before the Bulldogs closed out the first half with 17 points to take a halftime lead.
After a 28-yard field goal by Connor Greth, the Bulldogs got a 4-yard touchdown run from Dylan Kramer and a 14-yard score from Ferris.
The Coytes tied the game at 17 when J.J. Hide scored on a 2-yard run late in the fourth quarter.
Sam Rutherford ran for 113 yards in the victory. Teejay Gordon passed for 169 yards and a touchdown to lead the Coyotes. He also ran for 59 yards.
A.J. Wilson, the reigning Frontier Conference Defensive Player of the week, registered a team-high 11 tackles. He also picked off a pass and returned it 16 yards. That gives Wilson three picks on the season.
Reno Ward chipped in with six tackles and two sacks.
The Bulldogs look to go to 3-0 next week when they travel to Havre to take on winless MSU-Northern.
In other Frontier Conference games on Saturday, Montana Tech beat the Carroll College 19-19, Rocky Mountain College rolled Northern 46-0 and Southern Oregon topped Eastern Oregon 38-35.

BILLINGS — The Battlin’ Bears celebrated their Hall of Fame Game in style.
Chase White passed for 213 yards and a touchdown, while Jade Olson ran for 72 yards and two touchdowns to lead Rocky to the lopsided win. Stats
Kodee Varner added a 1-yard TD run, while Jarred Gallatin returned an interception 44 yards for a score.
Rocky improved to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in conference. The Lights fell to 0-3 and 0-2.
Southern Oregon 38, Eastern Oregon 35
ASHLAND, Ore. — Marcus Montano hit a 27-yard field goal with four seconds left, and Southern Oregon scored 24 straight points to overcome at 35-14 deficit. Stats
Tanner Trosin scored on runs of 10 and 8 yards, while Melvin Mason scored on a 2-yard plunge in Southern Oregon’s come-from-behind win.
Trosin ran for 116 yards on the day. He also completed 17 of 20 passes for 173 yards in the win.
Zach Bartlow passed for 218 yards and two TDs to lead Eastern Oregon.
