Frontier roundup: Dawgs take conference lead with blowout win

HAVRE — Montana Western is standing alone atop the Frontier Conference standings.

The No. 19 Bulldogs moved to 3-0 on the season Saturday with a 44-2 win at MSU-Northern. Stats

Sam Rutherford scored four touchdowns, and Bradley Smith tossed a pair of scores as the Bulldogs won their seventh straight game dating back to last season.

Rutherford scored on runs of 3, 8 and 1 yards as the Bulldogs built a 21-0 halftime lead. The junior running back then caught a 37-yard TD pass from Smith to start the scoring in the second quarter.

Bradley, a true freshman, also hit Cody Connolly for a 3-yard score, and Hunter Thomsen broke free for a 30-yard touchdown.

Seth Mason booted a 35-yard field goal in the win.

Smith completed 17 of 29 passes for 184 yards. Fellow true freshman J.D. Ferris also played, completing 7 of 17 passes for 104 yards. He was picked off once.

Matthew Fuhrman caught seven passes for 72 yards, while Dakota Pineda and Taft Benson each picked off a pass.

The Bulldog defense led powerful running back Zach McKinley to 42 yards on 13 carries.

The Bulldogs will be at home next week to take on Carroll College. Western will be celebrating homecoming and Hall of Fame weekend.

In other Frontier games Saturday, Carroll College beat Rocky Mountain College 42-36, Southern Oregon won 42-27 at Southern Oregon and Montana Tech fell 33-21 at Eastern Oregon.

HELENA — Mac Roche hit Connor Fohn for a 55-yard touchdown with 15 seconds left as the Saints bounced back from last week’s loss to Tech with a thrilling win at Nelson Stadium. Stats

The game-winner was the fourth of the day for Roche, a senior who passed for 290 yards on the day.

Fohn caught four passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns to lead Carroll’s injury-depleted receiving corps. Ryan Walsh ran for 96 yards in the win.

Chase White passed for 449 yards and three touchdowns to lead Rocky in the losing effort.

Southern Oregon 47, College of Idaho 27

CALDWELL, Idaho — Louis Macklin ran for 112 yards and a touchdown as the defending NAIA national champion Southern Oregon handed the College of Idaho its third straight loss. Stats

Macklin was one of four Raiders to score a rushing touchdown. Tanner Trostin and Melvon Mason each ran for 92 yards.

Tanner Trosin passed for 168 yards. He was picked off once.

Teejay Gordon passed for 179 yards to lead the Coyotes. He ran for another 78 yards and a touchdown. J.J. Yde ran for two scores in the win. 1 comment
