Montana Western opened the Frontier Conference football season with a statement. So did Carroll College.
The Bulldogs rolled to a 49-6 win over Rocky Mountain College Saturday at Herb Klint Field. The Saints, meanwhile, downed defending NAIA national champion Southern Oregon in a 26-20 thriller at Nelson Stadium.
The College of Idaho dropped a nonconference tilt at home to Pacific Union, while Eastern Oregon plays a night game at Sacramento State.
Next week’s schedule sees Carroll head to Montana Tech, while the College of Idaho travels to Dillon to take on Western. Also, Northern will play at Rocky, and Eastern Oregon heads across the state to battle Southern Oregon.
Montana Western 49, Rocky Mountain College 6
BILLINGS — Freshman quarterback J.D. Ferris threw a pair of TDs and A.J. Wilson scored three defensive touchdowns as Western left little doubt, winning its fifth straight game dating back to last season. Stats
Ferris, who completed 9 of 20 passes for 120 yards and one pick, hooked up Matt Lickford for a 15-yard strike to get the scoring started. He also threw a 6-yard scoring pass to Matthew Fuhrman.
Running back Dylan Kramer threw a 21-yard TD pass to Quinn Chamberlin, while freshman QB Bradley Smith got into the action with a 1-yard TD pass to Charlie Switzer.
Wilson returned two fumbles for TDs. One return went for 51 yards, while the other went for 40. He also returned an interception 38 yards to pay dirt. The pick was Wilson’s second pick of the day.
Carroll College 26, Southern Oregon 20
HELENA — Mac Roche hit Connor Poulson for a 15-yard touchdown pass with 7 minutes, 16 seconds left as the Saints won the rematch of last year’s playoff game at Nelson Stadium. Stats
The game winner was the third TD of the day for the senior quarterback who completed 26 of 42 passes for 266 yards. He was also picked off three times.
Ryan Walsh and Eric Dawson also caught TD passes. Walsh hauled in seven passes for 73 yards.
New Raiders quarterback Kamerun Smith completed 14 of 36 passes for 213 yards. He was picked off twice.
Pacific Union 32, College of Idaho 31
CALDWELL, Idaho — Pacific Union outscored the College of Idaho 20-0 in the fourth quarter to turn back the Coyotes in the nonconference game. Stats
Warner Shaw passed for 213 yards and three touchdowns to lead Pacific in the win. Nathan Suyematsu caught seven passes for 134 yards and one score.
Teejay Gordon threw for 342 yards and three scores in the loss.
