Frontier roundup: Dawgs bounce back, Saints lose gamble

Montana Western went on the road and picked up a huge win Saturday, beating Eastern Oregon 30-23.

Meanwhile, Carroll College went for a game-winning 2-point conversion at Southern Oregon. The gamble backfired, and the Saints fell 28-27 in overtime. In the day’s other Frontier Conference game, the College of Idaho won 38-17 at home over Rocky Mountain College.

Montana Tech and Southern Oregon remained tied on top the conference standings at 5-1. Western is one game back at 4-2, while Carroll and the College of Idaho are two back at 3-3.

Next week’s action will see the Orediggers travel to Carroll, Western play host to Rocky, Eastern Oregon head to MSU-Northern, and the College of Idaho head to Southern Oregon.

Montana Western 30, Eastern Oregon 23

La Grande, Ore. — Trailing 23-22 late in the fourth quarter, Dakota Wainwright returned a short punt 36 yards for a touchdown. J.D. Ferris ran in the 2-point conversion with 2 minutes, 9 seconds left.

The game-winning score game 5 minutes after Jace Billingsley scored on a 1-yard run to put the Mountaineers on top.

Ferris completed 16 of 24 passes for 107 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Matt Lickfold, who caught five passes for 92 yards, caught the TD pass.

Sam Rutherford bounced back with 92 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries in the win. Matt Fuhrman also ran for a score.

Billingsley ran for 93 yards to lead the Mountaineers. Zach Bartlow passed for 204 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

The victory stopped a two-game losing streak for the Bulldogs.


Southern Oregon 28, Carroll College 27

ASHLAND, Ore. — Southern Oregon struck first in overtime when Sean Tow scored on a 2-yard run.

Carroll answered with a 1-yard Dylan Green run four plays later. The No. 11 Saints went for the win and a 2-point conversion.

However, Mac Roche’s pass fell incomplete, giving the No. 2 Raiders their second overtime win in as many weeks.

The loss spoiled a big day for Roche, who passed for 343 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Both scoring strikes went to Ryan Walsh, who racked up 101 yards on five receptions.

Troy Arnston caught seven passes for 96 yards. Green ran for 63 yards and two scores.

Tanner Trosin passed for 235 yards in the win. Tow’s overtime TD was his second of the game.


College of Idaho 38, Rocky Mountain College 17

CALDWELL, Idaho — Teejay Gordon and Marcus Lenhardt hooked up for three touchdowns as the Coyotes picked up the home win.

Gordon passed for 260 yards, with 143 of those yards going to Lenhardt, whoc caught eight passes.

Chase White passed for 320 yards in the loss. He was picked off twice. Kodee Varner ran for 97 yards, while Tyrell McGee caught six passes for 131 yards.
