Four Butte athletes qualify for Junior Nationals

PROVO, Utah — Four young Butte athletes made the most of their trip to Brigham Young University for the USATF Region 11 Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships.

The meet ran Thursday through Saturday, and Butte Track Club members Trinity Smelich, Taryn Stratton, Burke McGruder and Isaac Kohler qualified for the Junior Olympic National Championships.

Junior Nationals are July 23-29 at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Stratton and McGruder each qualified in two events.

Stratton competed in the girls’ 15-16 age group. She placed second in the shot put and third in the discus. Stratton launched the shot put 27 feet, 6 inches. She threw the discus 85-10.

McGruder placed fourth in the 100-meter dash and long jump in the boys’ 11-12 age group. He ran the 100 in 14.03 seconds and jumped 13-9 ½ in the long jump.

Kohler placed fourth in the 1,500-meter run in the boys’ 13-15 age group. He crossed the finish line in 5 minutes, 9.22 seconds.

Smelich took fifth in the girls 15-16 high jump. She cleared 4 feet, 6 inches.

The top five in each event move on to Nationals.
