WHITEFISH — Montana Tech’s Austin Flynn and Montana Western’s Riley Martello took home Frontier Conference Player of the Week honors, the league announced today.
Flynn received the special teams honor, while Martello was named the top defensive player. Rocky Mountain College’s Jacob Bakken took home the Offensive Player of the Week award.
Flynn is a 6-foot-3, 250-pound junior defensive lineman from Orland, California.
In then-No. 20 Montana Tech’s 32-19 road loss to then-No. 22 Montana Western, Flynn blocked three kicks — one field goal and two points after touchdowns. One of the blocked kicks was returned for two points by teammate Demaree Morris.
Butte native Sean Cooney of Montana Western, Nathan Harden of Eastern Oregon and Dillon Johnson of Rocky Mountain College were also nominated for the award.
Martello is a 6-1, 220-pound senior linebacker from Bozeman. He recorded one solo tackle, one tackle for loss (-1), nine assisted tackles, one quarterback sack and an interception.
Martello’s fourth quarter interception returned for a touchdown sealed the Bulldog’s comeback win.
Justin May of Montana Tech, Daniel Garcia of College of Idaho, Zackary Jacobs of Eastern Oregon, Drew Melton of Carroll College and Ryder Rice of Rocky Mountain College were also nominated.
Bakken is a 6-4, 195-pound senior quarterback from Wibaux.
In then-No. 21 Rocky’s 34-21 home conference upset win over previously unbeaten and second-ranked Southern Oregon, Bakken completed 16 of 24 passes for 240 yards and three touchdowns. He rushed for 51 yards and one touchdown on 16 carries.
Jed Fike of Montana Tech, Kyler Prante of Montana Western, Victor Dias of Eastern Oregon, Shane Sipes of Carroll College and Tommy Wilson of MSU-Northern were also nominated.
