COLUMBIA FALLS — Butte Central’s Clay Fisher and Roy Russell placed second and fourth Saturday at the Western A Divisional wrestling tournament.
Fisher, a junior who won the 126-pound title at divisionals last year, dropped a 5-3 decision to Hamilton’s Michael Goldon in the 126-pound championship match. Earlier in the day, Fisher won by technical fall, 15-0, over Dante Venema of Corvallis in the semifinals.
Next week, Fisher will represent the Maroons at the state tournament in Billings. Last year, Fisher went to state and captured second at 126,
Russell, a senior, will join Fisher at state once again. Russell placed fourth at 103 pounds. After pinning Ashton Flamand of Browning, Russell topped Landen Stewart 7-4 to get into the third-place match. There, Russell fell to Maysn Cowell of Polson in 4:41.
Cowell also beat Russell in the quarterfinals.
Frenchtown won the team race with 246.5 points. Columbia Falls took second at 214, followed by Polson at 211.5.
Butte Central, which entered with just three wrestlers, scored 37.5 points, which put the Maroons in 12 place in the 12-team meet.
The state tournament begins Friday morning at the Metra.
