Ferriter, McGree lead Maroon at State A track

LAUREL – Butte Central’s track teams are forging ahead at the Class A State Track and Field meet at Laurel High School Field in Laurel, as the first day’s action wound up on Friday.

Rachael McGree took second place in the long jump with an identical mark to the winner – 16-10.75 – but lost the title on criteria. McGree has scored her team’s only points thus far, but Saturday will see her in the 100 hurdles finals, where she’ll line up right next to Dillon’s Holly Andersen.

Corvallis leads the girls’ event with 42 points while Hamilton is second with 34. The Central girls are in 10th place with eight points.

Butte Centrals’ boys got a nice performance from Marcus Ferriter in the shot put, where he placed second. The senior thrower notched a personal best 52-2.75, while the winning mark was just shy of 54 feet. Kaemen Richards finished just off the podium with a 46-10.5, good for seventh best.

Michael Cooney was one of four high jumpers who cleared 6-2, but with missed jumps he finished fourth in the event for the Maroons.

Butte Central’s sprint relay team of Blake Burton, Tanner Kump, Cole Harper and Kyle Harrington qualified for the event finals Saturday, as did Harrington in the 100.

Corvallis leads the boys’ race with 36, while Belgrade is second at 26. Central sits in seventh place with 12 points.

The event continues Saturday.
