Ferriter, Haeffner help Bobcats to sweep of Grizzlies

MISSOULA — Butte natives Sean “Diesel” Ferriter and Carley Haeffner each reached the top of the podium Saturday to help Montana State University sweep the University of Montana in a track & field dual at Dornblaser Field.

Ferriter, a senior who graduated from Butte Central, won the men’s hammer throw with a mark of 211 feet, 5 inches. That scored five points for the Cats. He also scored a point with a fourth-place mark in the discus at 145-9.

Haeffner, a Butte High grad who transferred to the Bobcats after beginning her career on the MSU-Northern volleyball team, cleared 5 feet, 5 inches to win the high jump. UM’s McCalle Feller was second at 5-3.

UM’s Keli Dennehy, a senior and Butte High graduate, won the 1,500-meter race in 4:40.5.

The Bobcat women also got a second-place performance in the hammer throw by Anaconda’s Jacqueline Verlanic. Her mark was 171-4.

Butte freshman Erika McLeod scored two points for the Grizzlies by placing third in the 400-meter hurdles. Her time in that event was 1 minute, 2.4 seconds.

McLeod placed eight in the 100 hurdles in 15.15. She also ran a leg of UM’s third-place 1,600-meter relay team.
