Ferriter, Abbott, Dennehy strong in MSU meet

BOZEMAN — The indoor track and field season got off to a full-force start for the University of Montana and Montana State Friday at the MSU Deal Meet Invitational in the Worthington Arenda.

Three Butte athletes made the most of the opportunity.

Gwenn Abbott and Keli Dennehy of the University of Montana and Sean Ferriter of Montana State all placed in the top three in their respective events.

Ferriter, a sophomore from Butte Central, placed second in the men’s weight throw with a toss of 17.13 meters (52 feet, 6 1/2 inches) to help the MSU men go Montana and Idaho State in duals.

Abbott, a senior from Butte High, placed third in the high jump, clearing 1.65 meters. Dennehy, a sophomore from Butte High, placed third in the 3,000-meter run, finishing in 10 minutes, 18.09 seconds.

Butte High graduate Sarah McGree is a senior on the Montana State team. She suffered an injury during competition Jan. 8.

MSU’s men beat Montana 92-92 and Idaho State 99-45. Montana topped Idaho State 73-62.

On the women’s side, MSU beat Montana 82, 66 and Idaho State 79.5-79.5. Idaho State edged Montana 77-73.

The Bobcats will compete in the MSU Open Friday in Bozeman. The Grizzlies go to Pullman, Wash., for a two-day meet at Washington State University.
