BILLINGS — Four different Billings Skyview players ran for a touchdown Thursday night, and the Falcons downed Butte High 46-8 in a Class AA football game at Daylis Stadium.
The outcome eliminates the Bulldogs from playoff contention. It also keeps Skyview’s postseason hopes alive.
“Credit goes to Skyview,” Butte High coach Arie Grey said. “They did a great job controlling the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.”
Logan Rodacker and Austin Carothers each ran for a pair of TDs, while Brock Bushfield and Dalton Macy each carried in one.
Macy’s 18-yard run was the longest scoring play of the night for the Falcons, who improved to 3-6 on the season.
Butte High, which played without starting quarterback Tommy Mellott (among others), saw Ty Peterson hit Josh Neil on a 48-yard scoring strike in the third quarter.
The Bulldogs used a little trickery to convert the 2-point conversion.
Grey and the Bulldogs borrowed a play the Chicago Bears used for 2 points against Minnesota in a recent Monday Night Football game.
Bo Mortensen took the hand off and handed the ball to Brady Deck, who pitched it to Andrew Booth. The ball hit the turf, but Booth recovered for the 2 points.
“It didn’t look as good as when it was run by the Bears,” Grey said. “But it worked.”
Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, the Falcons scored the first 32 points of the game, and the touchdown was too little, too late.
Grey, though, said he was happy with the effort the Bulldogs (2-7) put out throughout the entire game.
“The kids played hard,” Grey said. “They always play hard. They’re great kids.”
Grey said the Bulldogs will now focus on the final week of the season.
“We’ve got one week left with these seniors,” the coach said. “We’re going to get back to work and have a great week.”
Butte High will play host to Missoula Big Sky next Friday at Naranche Stadium. The Bulldogs will honor their seniors and their parents before the game.
