Falcons pull away from Butte High boys

BILLINGS — For a little more than a half, the Butte High boys’ basketball team gave defending Class AA state champion Billings Skyview a run for their money.

However, the fourth quarter belonged to the Falcons. Skyview outscored Butte High 23-8 in the final 8 minutes, and the Falcons knocked off Butte High 68-42 Friday night at the Skyview gym.

Nick Tranel, a 6-foot-5 senior, scored 10 of his game-high 26 points in the final frame to lead the Falcons, who improved to 10-0 overall and 4-0 in the Eastern AA. Tranel hit six 3-pointers.

Skyview junior RaQuan evans scored 11 of his 13 points after the break.

Bulldog senior Dylan Cook poured in 12 points to pace the Bulldogs, who fell to 1-8 and 0-3. Junior Ryson Lovshin scored 11 points, while classmate Brock Powell tossed in all of his seven points in the first quarter.

Butte High also got five points from Evan Anderson, three from Kash Kelly and two from Kiley Caprara and Travis Williams.

Butte High overcame a 19-9 deficit after the first quarter to trail 27-24 at the half.

Lovshin hit a 3-pointer to open the second half to pull the Bulldogs to within 27-26, but that was as close as Butte High got.

“We battled all game,” Butte High coach Luke Powers said. “It was way closer than it looks.”

The Bulldogs will play at Billings West at 4 p.m. Saturday. The Golden Bears were the runners up at last year’s Class AA State tournament.
