Eagles, rain nip BC boys

Butte Central’s boys’ tennis team fell just short of the Lewistown Eagles and the rain Tuesday at Father Sheehan Park.

The Maroons dropped a 4-2 match that was shortened by rain. The Butte Central girls’ lost a 7-0 decision to the Copperheads in Anaconda. Their match against Lewistown was rained out.

BC’s boys didn’t play Anaconda as planned because of a schedule conflict.

Maroons head coach Bernie Carey, who pointed out that BC No. 1 singles player Patrick Kenney was beating Lewistown’s Parker Phillips when the rain hit, said he was happy with his team’s effort.

“Losses like today are inevitable when a team like ours searches for their identity,” Carey said. “Our focus is not on the wins and losses, rather continuous improvement. We need to find the best doubles combinations and singles positions we can in preparation for divisionals.”

Kenney won his first set 7-5 and was up 2-0 in the second.

Jesse Reinke won in straight sets at No. 2 singles for the Maroons. Sam Sterns picked up a 10-3 tiebreaker victory at No. 4 singles. Lewistown swept the doubles matches.

“Even though we lost the meet, the guys played hard and showed improvement,” Carey said. “That’s all you can ask for.”

In the girls’ match, Anaconda won six matches in straight sets. The Copperheads also picked up a victory by default.

Bryce Noctor of Butte Central hits a shot in a doubles match.

BC’s Jesse Reinke sets up for a backhand.

Maroon Sam Joyce sets up for a forehand shot.
