The College of Idaho strengthened its NAIA men’s basketball national championship program Thursday with the announcement by Butte Central star Dougie Peoples that he will be joining the ‘Yotes team.
The 6-foot-5 senior all-time Maroons scoring leader and Montana Gatorade “boys’ basketball player of the year” made his announcement on Twitter social media.
“I am excited to announce my commitment to the College of Idaho,” Peoples said in his tweet. “I am extremely lucky to be able to join the national champions. Thank-you to my family, coaches, friends and everyone who has helped me get to this point.”
Peoples broke the BC single-game scoring record on February 8 with a 44-point performance in an 82-53 victory over Corvallis in the Maroon Activities Center. Butte Central placed third in the state Class A tournament this year after a semifinal-round loss to Dillon, only the seconds Maroons’ loss of the year. The other came against eventual state champion Lewistown in the season-opener. Lewistown wound up defeating the Dillon in the state championship game. It was Peoples’ buzzer-beating 3-pointer that lifted the Maroons past Lewistown in the 2022 state Class A title tilt.
Peoples was also a two-time winner of the Southwestern A MVP award and started on the BC varsity for three years after also seeing varsity time as a freshman.
The College of Idaho is located in Caldwell, Idaho. It is a football member of the Frontier Conference, but competes in basketball within the Cascade Conference.
