Butte High was able to empty the varsity roster against youth-laden Butte Central while backing freshman pitcher Cole Solomon’s stinginess for the Bulldogs in the first game of their baseball doubleheader Thursday at 3 Legends Stadium.
Butte High mixed its successes into a 26-6 victory over the Maroons as the game ended after five innings on the 10-run difference rule and with Bulldogs running the bases station to station due to the margin.
An 11-run Butte High fifth inning with 17 batters sent to the plate created them wide gap at the end. After a junior varsity game between the schools, the varsities were to play a second game to finish their conference series. Temperatures were chilly in the 40s and a bothersome wind blew across the diamond in the twin bill opener.
Sophomore shortstop Cayde Stajcar went 4-for-4 with four runs batted in and three scored to lead the Butte High offense. He had plenty of company. Junior center fielder Will Stepan belted three hits and junior second baseman Tocher Lee, batting leadoff, scored four times. The Bulldogs totaled a dozen hits while the lesser experienced Maroons committed eight errors.
Solomon worked four innings and yielded three hits. He struck out five batters and walked two.
The Bulldogs started scoring right away with a six-run top of the first inning. Lee ignited it with a single to left field. Stajcar followed with a bloop single behind the infield dirt on the right side. Lee scored on the play. Stajcar later scored on a sacrifice fly by Quinn Cox. Matthew Donaldson walked ans stole second base. Zack O’Connell singled to center and then Logan Carden reached on an error while Donaldson ran home. An out later, an error off the bat of Karsen McEwen let O’Connell in. Stepan then beat out an error while two runs crossed the plate. Butte High stole seven bases in the first inning.
Solomon set down the first three BC batters in order and then came back with a two-run second inning for an 8-0 early lead. Stajcar started the second inning with a base hit to left field and dashed to second on an errant pickoff attempt. Quinn Cox walked. The runners moved up on steals and consecutive sacrifice flies by Donaldson and O’Connell plated them.
After BC went three-up, three-down, Butte High put up three more runs for an 11-0 command in the third inning. A Stepan single, two hit batsmen and two errors did the damage. All three runs scored on errors.
The Maroons bowed their necks, though, and came back with three runs of their own in the third inning to break onto the scoreboard. Two walks and a Marquis Abad base hit loaded the bases with one out. Beau McGree raced home on a wild pitch, Abad scored on a base hit to left field by Jake Tauscher and Treigh Hollow then scored on a wild pitch. McGree, a catcher, and Hollow, a second baseman, are both eighth-graders. Abad is a sophomore center fielder.
Butte High tallied four times in the fourth for a 15-3 cushion. Alex Jorgensen came off the bench to single in Kaden McGillen, who had singled. Stajcar got an RBI when hit by a pitch with the bags full. Derek Dunmire then drove in two with a double to center field.
The fifth inning saw the Bulldogs scored 11 runs on five hits and three BC errors. Three hit bats men helped the Butte High cause. Stepan, Lee and Gunner Bushman singled in runs and another got home on an error before an out was recorded.
Maroon reliever Aiden Ossello recorded a pair of strikeouts. However, another error scored a run while keeping the sacks packed. A walk, two singles and a hit batter finished Butte High’s scoring. Stepan Lee had the run-scoring hits. Stajcar’s base hit in the inning was to way deep left field, but, due to the wide difference in the score, runners were held to a base each, limiting Stajcar to a single.
Butte Central didn’t leave willingly, however, The Maroons sent three more runs across the plate in the bottom of the fifth before the end arrived. Colt Hassler hammered a two-run double after Hollow walked and Tauscher was hit by a pitch. An out later, Kelton Keane singled to right. McGree then reached on an error and Hassler scored.
