Butte’ Renzy Doherty spun a complete-game victory in the opener Thursday afternoon to highlight an Eastern AA doubleheader split between the Helena Senators and Butte Miners at Copper Mountain Park.

The Miners won 6-4 before the Senators battled back to salvage the split with a 10-7 victory in Game 2.

The Miners, who are now 2-2 in conference, will play a non-conference twin bill against the Bitterroot Bucs on Saturday. Sunday they will celebrate Montana Tech day with a non-conference doubleheader against Twin Falls.

Butte Miners 6, Helena Senators 4
Doherty scattered nine hits and walked three batters in the victory. The lefty didn’t register a strikeout, letting his defense work behind him.

Quin Summers went 3 for 3 with a double and three RBIs to lead the Butte offense. Nate LeProwse added a double and a single, while Trey Hoagland, Trey Berger and Ax Henningsen each hit a single.

Logan LaFromboise added an RBI. Ray Moore and Payton Pappas doubled to lead the Senators.

Helena scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning after a bang-bang play at first went the Senators way. The Miners argued Colin Sassano should have been ruled out to end the game.

Moore came to the plate as the tying run and ripped a line drive to left-center field. But Butte centerfielder Trey Berger made a spectacular diving catch to end the game.

Hoagland also made a leaping catch at shortstop to steal a hit in the last inning.

Helena Senators 10, Butte Miners 7
Moore, Pappas and Henry Bowers each hit a pair of doubles to lead Helena’s 12-hit attack in the nightcap.

Pappas and Bowers drove in four runs each.

LeProwse homered for the Miners. Ryan Moodry went 3 for 3, while Hoagland and Summers each smacked a pair of singles. Berger doubled, while Doherty and Justin Summers singled.

Tanner McMahon struck out three and walked three in four innings to get the win on the bump. Zach Hart pitched into the fifth inning in the loss.
