WHITEFISH — The Butte Miners picked up a win to close out the Sapa-Johnsrud Class A-AA Tournament Sunday at Glacier Twins Memorial Field.

They did it in walk-off fashion, too, beating the Spokane Expos Blue 5-4 in the fifth-place game. (Boxscore)

The Miners went 2-2 at the tournament, and were slated to play in the fifth-place game. However, a late change of plans pitted them against the No. 3 seed.

Butte third baseman Rye Doherty doubled in Zach Tierney with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Tierney singled his way on base and took second on a wild pitch. He came home for the win when Doherty hit a two-out liner to left field.

The winning run came after Spokane tied the game at 4 in the top of the seventh. Lucio Reynolds hit a two-out doubled to score Cannon Marshall

Spokane led 3-0 before the Miners grabbed the lead with two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth.

Doherty was one of four Miners with a double in the win. He was joined by Kenley Leary, Kevin Donaldson and Tierney.

Eric Hart hit three singles, while Doherty, Leary and Tierney added singles. Sean Ossello and Cayde Stajcar hit singles. Doherty drove in two runs. Leary, Ossello and Hart each knocked in one.

Aidan Lee pitched into the seventh inning. George Riojas go the win in relief.

The Miners jump back into South A play Tuesday when they head to Three Forks for a huge doubleheader with the Gallatin Valley Outlaws. The Miners play their last regular-season home games Friday against Belgrade.

Butte (27-8) will close the regular season at Helena on Sunday, and the district tournament begins July 21 at 3 Legends Stadium.
