Dogs take one that matters at Skyview

BILLINGS — Butte High’s softball team split a doubleheader with Billings Skyview Friday afternoon.

The game the Bulldogs won was the one that counts. Ashten McCloskey belted two home runs as Butte High won the opener, which counted in Eastern AA standings, 5-0. The Falcons battled back to win the non-conference nightcap 7-3.

“We played awfully well,” Butte High coach Steve Stosich said, noting that the Bulldogs switched around their lineup for the non-conference game.

The Bulldogs (7-6, 5-2) will stay in Billings to take on Billings West in a 1 p.m. twin bill on Saturday. Both those games will count in conference standings. West beat Bozeman 8-0 and 10-0 on Friday.

McCloskey hit a three-run jack to break a scoreless tie in the fourth inning. The blast scored Bobbie Osterman, who walked, and Bethany McLean, who bunted for a base hit.

The Bulldog second baseman hit her second bomb to lead off the seventh inning as the Bulldogs got some insurance for Robertson, who was lights out.

“Those were two big home runs by Ashten McCloskey,” Stosich said. “She put runs on the board in a hurry.”

Butte made it 5-0 when Osterman drew a bases-loaded walk to force in Kendall Alley, who also walked.

Jessica Robertson struck out eight batters in the complete-game victory. She scattered five hits and walked none.

“She is pitching well,” Stosich said. “Skyview has been putting up a lot of runs lately.”

Butte High only managed three hits off Kassie Soelter, but the Bulldogs drew seven walks.

Leadoff hitter Morgan Bagley joined Osterman with a pair of walks.

Kris Rickhoff smacked two hits for the Falcons. All of Skyview’s hits were singles.

Stosich also noted the Butte High played solid defense in the conference win. He singled out the play of third baseman Baylee Thatcher, who returned to the hot corner after missing a couple of weeks with an ankle injury.

“Baylee had two great plays. One she threw from her knees all the way across the diamond,” Stosich said. “We played great defensively. We didn’t have any errors, and they didn’t have any errors.”

Alyssa Baxter homered, drove in three runs and struck out six Bulldogs in a complete-game in the nightcap.

Her home run was a two-run blast in the bottom of the fifth inning. That came after the Bulldogs pulled to within 5-3 with two runs in the top of the inning.

Baxter and Morgan Webster each hit an RBI single as the Falcons took command with three runs in the third.

The loss overshadowed a three-hit game by Amanda Spear, who belted a double and two singles for the Bulldogs. McCloskey hit two singles, while McLean and Alley added one.

The Bulldogs took the lead early when Bagley led off the game with a walk. she took second on a passed ball and scored on a Spear single.

Skyview, though, answered by scoring two in the bottom of the first — on a passed ball and an error.
