Dogs sweep Falcons, secure at least home playoff game

BILLINGS — The only way the Butte High softball team will be on the road in the postseason will be for the State tournament.

Butte High got four home runs and two complete games from Kaidy McClafferty as the Bulldogs swept Billings Skyview in an Eastern AA doubleheader.

The Bulldogs won the opener 9-3 before Amanda Spear hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 win in Game 2.

“Those are two big wins,” Butte High head coach Ryan Stosich said.

The victories, which put Butte High 8-2 in conference and 11-8 overall, clinch at least a home playoff series for the Bulldogs. Butte High still has an outside chance of winning the division, trailing Billings West and Great Falls Russell.

McClafferty, a freshman, struck out 10 batters in the first game. She let her defense help her out in the second game, throwing just 63 pitches as she improved to 9-4 on the season.

Skyview fell to 2-5 and 6-6.

The Bulldogs close out the regular season next Thursday when CMR comes to town for a pair of conference games.

The playoffs will be the following week, while the Class AA State tournament is May 21-23 in Missoula.

Maria Michelotti, Ashten McCloskey and Katelyn Alley hit home runs and Ellie Hoffenbacker hit a two-run pinch-hit double to lead the Bulldogs in the opener.

Hoffenbacker’s pinch hit, the second of the game, was a two-run double to highlight a four-run seventh inning that followed a three runs by the Falcons in the sixth.

Justyce Connole added a double for the Bulldogs, while McCloskey and Kennedi Ferriter each poked three hits. Bethany McLean extended her hot streak with two singles, while Spear added a single.

April Fisk doubled and April Guse went 3 for 4 to lead the Falcons. Abby Bryan struck out seven batters in the loss.
