‘Dogs go 3-1 at AA Duals

GREAT FALLS – Butte High got off to a tough start Saturday morning, but ended strong Saturday afternoon at the Class AA Duals wrestling tournament, held at Swarthout Fieldhouse in Great Falls.

The host Great Falls Bison walked away with the trophy in the fifth year of the event, downing Bozeman 49-11 in the title dual.

The Bulldogs dropped a tight 44-39 decision to Helena High in the first round, but stormed back through the consolation round-robin duals to finish with a 3-1 record for the day. Butte High defeated Kalispell Flathead 42-37, Helena Capital 57-30, and Missoula Big Sky 47-36.

“That was a disappointing loss,” Butte High head coach Jim Bob Humphrey said of the Helena dual. “We were inconsistent, and that has a lot to do with the youth and inexperience at the top and bottom of our lineup. We haven’t quite pushed past the point where we’re winning the close ones. I thought we’d be there by now.”

One place the Bulldogs showed some strength was the middle of the lineup. Senior Jarret Rowling went 4-0 at 140 pounds to lead an 18-2 record for the four weight classes between 130 and 152 pounds. Will Shea had a nice day at 130 pounds, going 3-0 before taking the final dual off to ice his ankles, while Levi Renz and Gage Weston each won a pair of matches at 135. Tom Challeen went 3-0 at 145, then bumped up to 152 to pick up his fourth win of the day. Andre Vialpando won matches at both 152 and 145 pounds as well.

Butte got off to an up-and-down start against Helena, as Blake Bowen collected a forfeit win at 98, followed by a solid showing by Kelly Merrick at 105, as he broke a 1-1 deadlock in the third period when he threw Nick Moreni to his back for the pin.

Butte High suffered pins in the following three matches to see the Bengals take a 18-12 team lead, but the solid middle portion of the Bulldog lineup won the next five bouts to give Butte a 39-18 lead. Shea showed great intensity as he applied deep half Nelsons before ending the match at the 49-second mark with a cradle. Renz scored first when he finished a double, finishing the bout with a head-and-arm pin, while Tom Challeen had to wait for the the third period – where he led 11-0 – to score a pin following a well-placed crossface roll. Bryce Armstrong took advantage of every opportunity in his 5-1 win over Jonathan Mandy at 152.

After that, however, it was all Helena. The Bengals gathered points from a technical fall and a pair of pins to take a 41-39 lead going into the heavyweight match. Butte’s Billy Robinson battled Jammer Halvorsen to a scoreless tie after the first period, but Halvorsen managed an escape in the second. That turned out to be it for the scoring, as Helena got the 1-0 win and held on for the dual win.

Stinging from the loss to Helena, Butte High built a large lead over the Braves in the consolation round that held off a late rally. Merrick opened with a first-period pin of Lucas DeCock, though Gavyn Wilson held off Kaden Queer for a major decision. Ax Henningsen then won the first of six straight matches for Butte with a 40-second pin of Miles Terry.

“We’ve got some good freshmen, but Ax has been probably the most consistent for us,” Humphrey said. “He and Merrick are turning into good leaders. Kaden and Kaleb Ferriter are wrestling really well too.”

Taryn Bennett ran roughshod over Cody Settle at 125, followed by Shea’s hard-fought 11-7 win at 130. The win over Davis avenged an earlier loss for the Bulldog senior. Gage Weston then stepped in at 135 and tallied a 13-0 lead over Cody Wood before scoring the third-period pin. Rowling utilized well controlled aggression, as he quickly turned a double arm bar for a 50-second pin. Tom Challeen entered yet another battle with rival Suny Cheff, and walked away with a 2-1 win thanks to a key second-period reversal in their 145-pound bout.

Armstrong then entered the longest match of the day against Flathead’s Nick Iavicoli at 152 pounds. Armstrong scored an escape in the second period, but Iavicoli answered with the same in the final 10 seconds of the third period to force extra time. Neither wrestler was able to score from his feet, and neither was able to score from the mat, so a third overtime was called for, and Armstrong’s inability to generate an escape from the bottom position gave Iavicoli the win.

“Bryce was sick today and he didn’t wrestle his best by any means,” Humprey said. “He pinned that kid in the semis at Bozeman.”

Nick Challeen, who went 3-1 on the day, was the only other Bulldog to win a match in the remainder of the dual, solidifying Butte’s win.

Butte’s win over Capital was never in doubt, as the Bulldogs pulled to a 39-0 lead before the Bruins collected a team point. Henningsen battled to a 7-3 win over Trevor Ball, while Shea escaped a cradle to give himself a chance for an 11-2 lead before his victory by pin in the third period.

Renz, who has refined the double-leg takedown to a fine art, used the move to take James Jewett to his back for the pin in just over a minute, which was about the same amount of time Rowling needed to staple Ethan Askin. Tom Challeen was up 14-2 when he pinned Keavon Tamol in the second period, and Vialpando registered his pin of Caleb Pott 77 seconds into the match. Nick Challeen, who had only one varsity win coming into the day, got his second win of the tourney with a third-period pin of Nick Argento, and Tyler Ossello scored a 45-second pin in his only mat appearance of the day against Corey Preshinger at 105 pounds.

With the championship bracket pressure off, Humphrey was able to get matches for each wrestler who made the trip.

“Everyone who came got a match, and all of our backup guys won their matches,” he said. “Still, I’d rather have the pressure of being on the winner’s side of the bracket.”

Butte won six of its first eight matches against Big Sky, but most were by decision instead of pin, and the Bulldogs led 29-12 with six matches and a 189-pound forfeit still looming. Jon Conklin pinned Butte’s Blake Bowen in the 98-pound bout, giving the Eagles a 36-29 edge with three matches remaining – all featuring Butte High freshmen. They came through in the clutch, as Merrick, Queer and Henningsen all registered pins for the team win.

“Our young guys dug out the Big Sky win for us,” Humphrey said. “They pinned out to save it for us.”

Bennett, another freshman, got the ball rolling at 125 with a 12-0 decision, then Weston looked unstoppable in a 20-second pin of Ryan Glenn at 135.

“Gage Weston was lights-out today,” Humphrey observed.

Rowling then wrestled his first six-minute match in some time, though he registered a convincing 14-1 win that brought his record to 12-1 on the season. Rowling’s only loss this season came in the opener against Glacier, where he lost at 145 pounds to Cole DeLaughder. Vialpando followed with a 4:36 pin at 145, while Tom Challeen bumped up to 152 where he managed a pair of reverses to post a 4-3 win over second-ranked Luke Entzel.

Nick Challen pinned Jason Reikena at 171, but the Eagles took the forfeit and three straight pins to set up the freshman save. Merrick was up 10-5 in the second period when he turned Ryan Rowe over for a pin, while Queer’s pin of Dylan Lindsey came a fraction of a second before the end of the first period, which he led 5-0. It was Queer’s first varsity win of his career.

A pin in the final match would have given Big Sky the dual win, but Heningsen took care of business and ended Butte High’s day with a 72-second pin of Chase Cook.

“Happy for the way they wrestled,” Humphrey said. “Jarret, Levi, and Tom looked good today. Willy Shea is coming off a bad ankle sprain, but he’s consistent and doing what we’re asking of him.”

Humphrey lamented the loss of Blake Kraus and the forfeits at 189 pounds that will continue through the remainder of the season.

“We’re out of luck at 189,” he said. “We have nobody near there, but we have seven guys at 160. Still, four of them are freshmen, so that bodes well for the years to come at the heavier weights.”

Butte High is back in action when the Bulldogs celebrate Senior Night against Dillon. They’ll host Billings West and Senior on Saturday, then have a week to prepare for the Eastern AA seeding meet in Bozeman.

“We’ll have nine solid practices before the state qualifying matches,” Humphrey said. “That’s only going to help.”
