Dillon’s Thomas a finalist for national award

Dillon boys’ basketball coach Terry Thomas has been named a finalist for the National High School Athletic Coaches Association national coach of the year.

Beaverhead County High School announced the selection of Thomas as a finalist this morning.

Thomas is one of eight finalists from across the nation who will be honored during The National Coach of the Year Awards Banquet June 29 in Louisville, Kentucky.

Thomas has served as head coach of the Dillon Beavers for the past 11 seasons. He has compiled a 216-34 record, making the state tournament nine out of 11 years.

Under Thomas, the Beavers have won four state championships. The Beavers also finished second three times and placed third once. Additionally, Thomas’ Beavers have won nine Southwestern A titles and eight divisional tournaments.

Thomas also led Dillon to five Class A state titles in football. He retired from coaching high school football following the 2012 season.

Thomas is a Hall of Fame member of both the Montana coaches Association (2007) and the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame (2013).

The National High School Athletic Coaches Association is the oldest coaches association in the nation. Formed by coaches, for coaches, the association has been recognizing national coaches of the year since 1978.
