Dillon defeats Short Handed Maroons

By Ron Davis

The Butte Central Maroons went in to Friday nights conference match-up with the Dillon Beavers with out many of their key contributors.  It got worse for the Maroons as they lost outstanding two way lineman Caden Kibbler to a hand laceration just three minutes into the game.  That left the Boys from Butte down 9 starting positions against one of the states premiere class A teams.

What the Maroons did in the first half of the game defines the term “Butte Tough”.  The mostly injured boys played their hearts out in the half going punch for punch with the Beavers.

“I am so proud of our kids, we went toe to toe with Dillon in the first half.” Coach Donnie Peoples said in a phone call after the game. “We had an amazing offensive performance tonight against a great team.  We moved the ball, and had some of the breaks not gone against us this game would have been a lot closer.”

Dillon opened the scoring with 2:04 left to play in the first quarter when Treyton Graham caught an 11 yard pass from Kee Christanson to go up 6-0.  The score stayed at six when the feisty Maroons blocked the point after attempt and the quarter ended with the 6-0 score.

The under manned Maroons moved the ball down to the Dillon 6-yard line with 6:24 to play in the half.  The BC boys took the lead on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Holter to tight end Eric Loos, who himself was playing injured, to tie the score at 6.  Ethan Andersch broke the tie with the point after and the Maroons were in the lead.

Dillon didn’t waste time getting the lead back,  just under two minutes later, Christansen  scored on a 13 yard run.  Once again the PAT failed and the Beavers led by 5.  The Half ended with the tenacious boys from Butte trailing 12-5.

The Maroons played Dillon tough in the half and had it not been for some drive killing penalties, might have gone in to the locker room with the lead.

The second half was another story as Graham took the opening kick off 90 yards for the third touchdown of the game for the Beavers.  The PAT was good and Dillon had a little breathing room at 19-7.  The kick return was a huge momentum swing for the home team and the Maroons never seemed to get back in to the first half groove.

Holter and Rye Doherty tried their best to get the offense moving.  Holter finished the game with over 200 yards passing and well over the century mark rushing.

Dillon scored two more times in the third quarter with two touchdown runs by Kale Konen, from one and four yards out.At the end of three quarters Dillon had blown the game wide open with a 33-7 score.  Konen added a 50 yard run for a score just 22 seconds gone of the fourth quarter clock.

The scrappy Maroons were not done yet as Kyle Holter hit wide receiver Dougie Peoples for a 40 yard score to make the score 40-14.

The final score came with 2:15 left in the game when Dillon Freshman Jrney Mataafa scored on a 4 yard run.  The point after made the final score 47-14.

Hopefully the Maroons get healed up this week as they play host to Frenchtown next Friday night.
