SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Montana Tech’s volleyball season ended in the wee hours Thursday night.
The No. 19 Orediggers swept past Saint Mary (Kansas) to conclude pool play before falling 25-20 in a one-set tiebreaker to No. 3 Indiana Wesleyan at the NAIA National Volleyball Tournament at the Tyson Events Center. (Scores/stats)
The tiebreaker ended just before midnight (MST). It was nearly 1 a.m. in Iowa.
The Wildcats, who fell to Tech Wednesday night, overcame a 17-14 Oredigger lead in the tie breaker to set up a round of 16 match against Grand View (Iowa) at 12:15 p.m. (MST) Friday.
The hard-fought loss ends the Tech volleyball careers for seniors Sabrina Hopcroft and Heather Thompson. Tech ends the season at 27-8 after the 2-1 pool-play performance at nationals.
Karina Mickelson’s 17 kills led Tech’s attack in the late-night win over Saint Mary. Thompson spiked 12, while Maureen Jessop and Gena McMillan each added seven and Sydney Sparks killed six.
McKenna Kaelber dished out 45 assists, and Hopcroft led the Oredigger backcourt with 17 digs. McMillan (14) and Kaelber (11) joined Hopcroft in double figures in digs.
