Diggers spike competition on Day 1 of Florida tourney

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Montana Tech went 2-0 Friday at the PBC Sports Commission Classic, and the Orediggers made it look relatively easy with a pair of sweeps.

Tech swept Ave Maria University and Keiser University on the opening day of the two-day tournament.

In their first match, the Orediggers beat Ave Maria 25-22, 25-18, 25-15. (Stats)

Maureen Jessop registered 12 of Tech’s 38 kills in the victory. She also collected eight digs. Karina Mickelson spiked eight kills, while Olivia Muir added seven.

McKenna Kaelber dished out 28 assists, and Sarah Hopcroft led the backcourt with 11 digs. Emma Carvo served five aces. Hopcroft joined Jessop with four aces.

Tech really put a hurting on Keiser with a 25-9, 25-13, 25-20 beat down. (Stats)

Mickelson killed 10, and Jessop spiked eight in win. Kaleber handed out 25 assists, and Emma McMillan joined Jessop with three aces. Hopcroft notched a team-best six digs.

The Orediggers will play Florida Memorial University at noon Saturday. They close the tournament at 2 p.m. against Goshen College of Indiana.
