‘Digger Men Finish Third at Rocky

The Montana Tech men’s golf team finished the Frontier Conference season finishing in third place at the Battlin’ Bears Invitational at Yegen Golf Club. North Idaho College best host Rocky Mountain on their home course to win the tournament.

The Orediggers dropped a few strokes today shooting a 287 and finishing with a final team score of 858 (+6). Northern Idaho finished with a 836 (-16) and the Battlin’ Bears in second with a 840 (-12).

“I was proud of our men having a great tournament to finish off the fall season,” said head coach Sean Ryan. “We had some guys baffle some bad breaks and slow start to shoot consistent rounds. We finished the tournament at just six over par, and I know we left a ton of stuff out there.”

Matt Hobbs led the Orediggers moving up one spot into T7 with a 213 (E) for the tournament. Hobbs also hit a hole-in-one on the final round. “Matt hit the shot of the day when he made a hole-in-one on the 200-yard par three third hole.”

Jhett Braley shot a team-low 67 today moving up nine spots on the leaderboard to finish in T11 with a 214 (+1). “Jhett played great and led us today with a fantastic round today to close out the tournament. He played really well despite start off with some bogeys early in the round.”

JR Small and Gabe Witham dropped on the leaderboard finishing in T15 with a final 217 (+4) for the tournament. Playing as an individual, freshman Joe Opitz had his best round of the season with a 68 today. Opitz moved into T11 up seven spots from yesterday. “Joe finally broke through and shot his lowest round of the season. He just got better with every round this tournament, which is a great thing to see.”

“I’m proud of this team for all their hard work from top to bottom. We saw great rounds out of everybody this tournament and we know we need to just get a little more consistent before this spring season.”
