The Dawson Community College softball team is once again two wins away from the NJCAA National Tournament.
The Buccaneers (23-10), coach by Butte native Jim LeProwse, captured the Region XIII championship over the weekend in Devils Lake, North Dakota.
Dawson will play No. 2-ranked Kirkwood Community College from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in a best-of-three series starting Thursday in Glendive. The winner heads to the National tournament in Clinton, Mississippi.
“We’ve got a tough task to get there,” LeProwse said. “We’ll give it all we have.”
Butte High graduate Jessica Robertson, a sophomore, pitched all three games in the tournament. The Bucs beat Dakota County Technical College 5-1 on Friday. They then Beat Lake Region State College on Saturday and Sunday, winning 4-1 on Saturday and 16-7 on Sunday.
Cassidy Wall hit line-drive home run over center field on a 3-0 pitch to end Sunday’s game with by the 10-run rule in the fifth inning.
The victory gave LeProwse and the Buccaneers their third straight title and the fourth in his seven years at the school.
LeProwse was named the Region XIII coach of the year for the third straight year as well. The honor is his fourth overall.
LeProwse said his plan is for Robertson to face Kirkwood.
