Dawgs split with Northern

DILLON — Montana Western and MSU-Northern split a Frontier Conference doubleheader Thursday night at Straugh Gymnasium.

The defending women’s NAIA national champion Bulldogs knocked off Northern 58-45 (stats) in the opener. The Lights topped the Western men 59-54 (stats) in the nightcap.

Paige Holmes scored 11 points to lead a balanced Western attack as the Bulldog women won their fourth straight game. Savanna Bignell added 10 points, while Mesa King and Gracey Meyer each tossed in nine.

McKenzie Gunter’s 16 points led the Skylights. Tiara Gilham netted 12, and Peyton Kehr scored eight.

Adam Huse scored 13 points to lead the Northern men, who overcame a 29-25 halftime deficit. Kavon Bey and Jesse Keltner each scored 10.

James Jones poured in 27 points to lead the Bulldogs. He also grabbed five rebounds and dished out four assists. Connor Burkhart scored 10 points.

Western’s teams will head to Great Falls to take on the University of Providence on Saturday. Northern will travel to Billings to take on Rocky Mountain College.
