Dawgs set homecoming, Hall of Fame weekend

The University of Montana Western kicks off its homecoming weekend Friday with a social held at the Beaverhead Golf Club from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. New members will be inducted into its athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday.

Montana Western will induct Jason DesJarlais, Wally Feldt, West Hernandez, Bobbi Suhr Konen, and the 1991-92 Men’s Rodeo Team during a ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the Lewis and Clark Room on the University of Montana Western campus. Inductees also will be introduced during halftime of that day’s football game versus Carroll College.

Jason DesJarlais graduated from the University of Montana Western in 1995, known then as Western Montana College.  While at UMW, Jason played football from 1992 to 1995, and was part of Conference Champion teams in ’93 through ’95.  He was named Defensive MVP of the 1996 National All-Star Game and is a member of the 1994 Western Montana College Hall of Fame Team. After earning his bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1995, he went on to receive his master’s degree in kinesiology from Humboldt State University in 1999. Jason began his coaching career at Western Montana in 1996, serving as Defensive Line Coach.  He went on to coach at Humboldt State University, University of San Diego, Jacksonville University, Yale University and has been a scout for the Jacksonville Jaguars since 2007.  Jason and his wife, Dana, have two children, Makala and Tanner.

Wally Feldt earned a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies from Western Montana College in 1973.  Wally began what would become a long career in radio and sports writing in Laramie, Wyoming in 1975 and had stints in Las Vegas, Idaho Falls, and Boise.  In 1988 Wally made it back to Dillon, Montana to work for KDBM as program, sports and music director, sales person and on-air personality.  Wally returned as “Voice of the Bulldog” during his time at KDBM.  Feldt began writing for Montana Western in 1990 as a sports information writer and added news and publication duties to his list of responsibilities and held that position until 2009.  Wally has served as the director of media relations for the Frontier Conference since 1993 and currently holds that position today.  He can also be heard announcing Bulldog football, volleyball and basketball games.

Bobbi Suhr Konen earned her bachelor’s degree in business communications with an emphasis in computer technology in 2003. Bobbi played women’s basketball at Montana Western from 1999-2003. During her time at UMW, Bobbi was part of a team that won three conference titles. Bobbi earned three conference MVP awards, a Second Team All-American and two Kodak All-American First Team awards. Additionally, she is Montana Western’s women’s all-time leading scorer, was “Athlete of the week” numerous times, and was featured in Sports Illustrated “Faces in the crowd.”  Bobbi currently resides in Dillon with her husband, Kevin and four children, Kale, Kylie, Kaitlyn, and Kesslee.

West Hernandez graduated from the University of Montana Western in 2003 with a bachelor’s of business and communications.  During his athletic career at UMW, West played on the men’s golf team and men’s basketball team.  He was a member of the All-Frontier First Team for men’s golf multiple years, Academic All-Conference Men’s Basketball, and received the Vanderzanden Award for men’s basketball, all while making the Dean’s List throughout his sports career at Montana Western.  Since 2007, West has worked at Northwest College in Powell, WY as admissions manager, where he’s also assisted with the men’s basketball team.  West and his wife, Katie, have three children, Landon, Emery and Paxton.

The 1991-1992 men’s rodeo team was the first Montana Western rodeo team to be crowned Regional Champions since the early 1960s. They went on to place fifth in the College National Finals Rodeo. Jesse Peterson placed first in the nation in steer wrestling. Pete Peterson placed second in the nation in steer wrestling and Jess Martin placed third in the nation in saddle bronc.  Coached by Wayne Else, the team consisted of Jess Martin, Dan Mulkey, Shannon Worthman, Pete Peterson, Jesse Peterson and Lari Sluggett.

This year’s inductees will be honored during a brunch ceremony in the Lewis and Clark Room in Mathews Hall. Tickets for the brunch ceremony are available for $10. Call the UMW Alumni Office at 683-7305 to reserve tickets.
