CALDWELL, Idaho — A huge day by College of Idaho quarterback Teejay Gordon wasn’t enough to deny Montana Western.
Sam Rutherford, Bradley Smith and Hunter Thomsen ran for touchdowns, and George Sherwood scored on 78-yard reception as the No. 16 Bulldogs beat the College of Idaho 27-23 to improve to 6-2 in the Frontier Conference. Stats
The win leaves the Bulldogs one game behind Montana Tech and Southern Oregon heading into the final two weeks of the season.
The Coyotes fell to 3-5 in conference and 3-6 overall despite the big day from Gordon, who threw for 371 yards.
Thomsen scored on a 21-yard run midway through the fourth quarter to extend Western’s lead to 27-17. Smith and Rutherford each scored on 9-yard runs.
Smith’s long strike to Sherwood got the Bulldog scoring touchdown. The true freshman quarterback, starting in place of injured J.D. Ferris, completed 8 of 23 passes for 172 yards. He was picked off three times.
Skyler Roope, Taft Benson and Dakota Wainwright each were credited with eight tackles to lead the Bulldog defense. A.J. Wilson and Tim Mundaniohl each had seven take downs.
Also, Tyrell Penner and Andrew Gilpin got in on a sack, Wainwright and Dylen Atchison both forced a fumble, and Roope and Mundaniol each picked off a pass.
The Bulldogs will be back at home next week, taking on winless MSU-Northern.
Western will then close out the season at Montana Tech in a game that could decide the Frontier Conference title.1 comment
