Dalton Daum repeats as Gatorade Athlete of the Year

Make it two in a row for Dalton Daum.

The recent Butte High graduate was named Gatorade Montana Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year. Gatorade announced the award this morning, marking the second straight year the Bulldog superstar has received the honor.

“The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the track, distinguishes Daum as Montana’s best high school boys track & field athlete,” Gatorade said in a statement.

Daum, who signed to play football at the University of Montana, is a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year, which will be announced later this month.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound senior sprinter defended his State titles in the 100- and 200-meter races last month at the Class AA State meet in Kalispell.

Daum broke the tape in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.81 seconds as well as the 200, in 21.67. The state’s returning Gatorade Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year became just the second athlete in Montana history to repeat as state champion in the sprints in consecutive seasons.

Daum has maintained a 3.82 GPA in the classroom. A member of the National Honor Society, he has volunteered locally on behalf of multiple area food and clothing drives to benefit families in need. He has also donated his time as a youth football and track & field coach.

“Dalton Daum has great top-end speed,” Butte High head coach Arie Grey said. “His drive phase in the 100-meter dash is what separates him from the competition.”

The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport.

The selection process is administered by the Gatorade high school sports leadership team in partnership with USA TODAY High School Sports, which work with top sport-specific experts and a media advisory board of accomplished, veteran prep sports journalists to determine the state winners in each sport.
