Dahlberg meet in the starting blocks

Mother Nature is back with some warm weather, and not a moment too soon, as the annual Swede Dahlberg Track and Field Meet is set to get under way Saturday at 10 a.m. at Charlie Merrifield Track, at the Gene Fogarty Athletic Complex. Meet schedule  Meet records

Hosted by Butte High, the all-male meet draws all 14 Class AA schools as well as Butte Central of the Class A.

Butte High head track coach Arie Grey noted that this meet marks nearly the midpoint of the track season, and that he and his boys’ team are excited to match up against the rest of the Class AA competition.

“We’ve only had three meets,” Grey noted, also pointing to the canceled home meet from Tuesday. “This is the first big one, and it’s a great way to start getting ready for the big ones to come – divisionals and state. It’ll be nice to see where we’re at.”

The meet begins at 10 a.m. with the 3,200 and some field events, and ends with the mile relay at 3:30 p.m. The 100, 200 and 110 hurdles will all see preliminary heats, with finals set for after the lunch break

The Bulldogs are strongest in the sprints and hurdles, boasting returning 100- and 200-meter state champion Dalton Daum, but Grey said the real excitement for him comes in seeing which athlete takes it upon himself to shine on a particular day. Butte has plenty of potential in other areas, such as the throwing rings and the jumping pits.

“It’s going to be fun to watch and see who steps up,” Grey said. “We know where we’re strong. Now we need to get that improvement from the other areas.”

Helena, Billings West and Kalispell Flathead look to have some of the better times and marks this season and should also be fun to watch Saturday, as the weather is forecast to be very pleasant for springtime in Montana.

Butte High’s girls will compete Saturday at the Optimists Meet in Great Falls. As with the Dahlberg, the Great Falls meet brings in most of the Class AA girls’ competition in the state.

Butte High looks for another big day from the jumping contingent, led by sophomore Abby Dodge.
