Coyotes stun Western in home opener

The College of Idaho made it 2 for 2 Saturday afternoon.

The Coyotes, who played their first football game since 1977 last week, won their first home game in 37 years, upsetting Montana Western 31-28 in front of a large home crowd.

In other Frontier action, Rocky Mountain College rolled to 3-0 with a 36-18 win over MSU-Northern in Havre, while Southern Oregon crossed the state to beat Eastern Oregon 35-31 to improve to 2-0.

Next week, Carroll College heads to Rocky, while Eastern Oregon hits the road to take on Montana Tech, Western plays host to Northern and the College of Idaho makes a trip to Southern Oregon.

College of Idaho 31, Montana Western 28
CALDWELL, Idaho — Luke Taylor booted a 22-yard field goal with 7 minutes, 24 seconds left Saturday, and that proved to be the difference for the Coyotes. Stats

The game was the first ever in the Frontier Conference and the first at home for the Coyotes in 37 years. The College of Idaho (2-0) played their first game since 1977 last week.

Kyle Merritt tied the game at 28 early in the fourth quarter before Taylor Booted the game winner.

Quarterback Teejay Gordon ran for two touchdowns and threw one more — to Austin Diffey — to lead the Coyotes to the victory.

Tyler Hulse scored on a 38-yard run to lead the Bulldogs to a 7-0 in the first quarter.

After Gordon tied the game with a 5-yard run, Sam Rutherford, who ran for 122 yards, put the Bulldogs back on top with a 2-yard plunge.

COI tied the game twice in the third quarter — on a 3-yard run from Gordon and Gordon’s 21-yard strike to Diffey. Each time, the Bulldogs answered.

Hulese hit Matthew Fuhrman for an 11-yard score before sneaking in for a 1-yard score to send the game into the fourth quarter with the Bulldogs up 28-21.

That was the end of the good news for the Bulldogs, who fell to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the Frontier.

Rocky Mountain 36, MSU-Northern 18
HAVRE — Bryce Baker completed 17 of 22 passes for 250 yards and a touchdown to lead the Bears, who exploded for 25 points in the third quarter. Stats

Cedric Frost returned a kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown in the victory.

Travis Dean passed for 221 yards in the loss. He hooked up with Trevor Baum nine times for 135 yards.

Southern Oregon 35, Eastern Oregon 31

Austin Dodge passed for 323 yards and two touchdowns in the win. He was picked off three times.

Dodge hooked up with Dylan Young and Jeremy Scottow for score.

Zach bartlow passed for 262 yards and three touchdowns for the Mountaineers.
